Why Now?

We’re living in unprecedented times: a global pandemic in the post-Industrial age means knowledge workers in particular are being forced to rethink the way they work overnight. We’re not sure how long this crisis will last or the ongoing impact of societal changes to our workplaces. Instead of “muddling through,” we can use this as an opportunity to reevaluate why and how we work to create efficient, effective, and sustainable workplaces even while we relearn how to work from a distance.

Even before this global crisis, research showed the average worker spends two-thirds of their day simply managing their work. Add in these new, sudden changes to how, when and where you work and you’re likely losing hours or productivity each week as your team figures out how to work from home, navigate new technology, collaborate remotely and stay focused amid scattered meetings, constant temptation to check the news, and the needs of their families and communities.

It’s essential now to shift away from rewarding employees based on how long they’re sitting at a desk to outcome-focused work that rewards outcomes, not hours worked. And it’s more important than ever to keep your team from burning out so they can continue to work well during and long after the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us.

Running an organization in the face of a likely economic downturn is stressful. Running an organization in the midst of an epidemic is scary. It’s more important than ever to rethink the way you work so your organization can stay focused on the right things and come out of this crisis optimized to thrive.
